With Halloween on its way, we need to think about how the holiday affects all the family members in our home, including our pets. Every holiday provides opportunity for fun and excitement, but also for anxiety and safety concerns when it comes to our pets. In order to keep your pet safe during this fun fall holiday, refer to the steps below.
Step 1: If you've decided to take your pet trick or treating, make sure you've chosen an appropriate costume for him. Make sure your pet won't be uncomfortable with the costume you've chosen and that he'll be able to relieve himself when necessary. Also, make sure there are no small accessories that he might try to ingest.
Step 2: When you dress him in his costume, make sure you allow room for his collar and identification tags. Keep him leashed at all times while you are out and about enjoying the festivities. If he becomes separated from you with all of the excitement, you'll want to be able to get your pet back!
Step 3: Observe his behavior throughout the evening. It might be disconcerting for him to see all of the costumes of the children and he might become frightened. It's even possible that Halloween makes him so uncomfortable that he might bite someone in costume. Once it appears your pet is no longer enjoying the holiday, it's time to head back home.
Step 4: Although you might want your pet to stand alongside you and pass out candy, it's probably a better idea to have him fenced or contained within a room of your home. With the door opening and closing with each trick or treat-er, he might be tempted to slip out. Also, some visitors to your home might be fearful of dogs and this will allow them to approach your door without fear.
Step 5: Store treats in a locked location. Pets will be able to smell all of those goodies you acquired and they will stop at nothing to find them in the home. The days after Halloween are busy ones for veterinarians who are treating poisoned pets.
Step 6: Give your pets treats of his own. This will make him feel a part of the fun while still keeping his best interests at heart.
It only comes around once a year, but Halloween is a holiday you need to prepare your entire family for, including the family pets!
